Description

After two years as the equipment manager I pivoted to being a camp counselor at the same camp, Pioneer Trails Day Camp. While the cadence of my days remained similar I gained experience in conflict resolution, group management and leadership on a small scale. The experiences of this position created foundations of self-confidence.

In this role I learned that children (and adults) are watching your every move. The phrase “people see everything” rang true. Kids would see which counselors were engaged, which counselors were kind. Adults saw who showed up on time, who remained calm in times of stress and who added value.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise a group of 25 first graders for a seven week summer camp
  • Manage special camper circumstances
  • Create a positive and fun environment
  • Provide feedback and guidance to junior staff and counselors in training
  • Interface with parents concerning camper issues

Lessons Learned

  • People are watching – always be the best version of yourself
  • A positive attitude adds a lot of value
  • While projecting confidence does not equal actual confidence it goes a long way
  • Decisive actions are critical
